Carmen

The tantalizing scents of sizzling meat and brewing coffee draw me gradually from sleep. I stretch lazily. My body is pleasantly sore as I reach across the massive bed seeking Aldous's warmth. My hands find only empty, rumpled sheets.

Blinking, I sit up clutching the silky duvet to my bare breasts and scan the suite. It appears I'm alone in the room.

Where’s my husband? Wow. It feels a little strange to say that, but I suppose I better get used to it.

I hear a distant clatter of dishware and the sizzle of something cooking. Relief floods me. Breakfast! I’m famished.

Smiling to myself, I slip from bed, find Aldous's discarded dress shirt from last night on the floor, and slide it on. His spicy, masculine scent surrounds me as the crisp fabric skims my thighs.

On quiet feet, I pad toward the scents luring me like a seductive siren song. I find a doorway that leads to a chef's kitchen any restaurant would envy. And there standing at the commercial-grade stove, tending a sizzling skillet wearing nothing but snug black briefs that hug his firmly muscled ass, is my glorious husband.

I lean against the doorframe, just watching him, enthralled by the play of sculpted muscle across his broad shoulders as he cooks. Everything about him radiates strength and primal masculinity. This magnificent man is mine. I send up a silent prayer of gratitude.

Then suddenly something odd catches my eye. As Aldous stands at the stove deftly flipping strips of sizzling bacon, his back to me, morning sun slants through the window, bathing his broad shoulders in gold...and green?

I tense. No, it must be a trick of the light. But as I stare, the skin between his shoulder blades seems to ripple and change, taking on an oddly scaled texture. The muscles appear to shift beneath, as though something powerful lurks under his human facade. My pulse picks up.

As if sensing my intense focus, Aldous glances over his shoulder with a heart-stopping smile. "Good morning, wife. I thought I'd prepare you a home-cooked breakfast."

I give myself a little shake and blink rapidly, rubbing my eyes. When I look again, his back is once more only smooth skin over sculpted muscle. No sign of anything…um…alien or…gulp…reptilian.

"Is everything all right? You seem worried." Aldous crosses the room and strokes my cheek with the back of his fingers as he gazes down at me.

I’m being ridiculous, I scold myself as his handsome face creases with concern. I am not losing it. I’m just tired. Too many late nights and stresses over money. I force my lips into what I hope is a bright, carefree smile but inside I’m panicking.

"I'm fine, just groggy I guess." I turn my head to kiss his wrist, trying to act as though I’m not on the verge of hysteria.

I'm seeing things, that's all. It’s normal to see things that aren’t there every once in a while, I tell myself. But is it?

"Thank you for making me breakfast, it looks⁠—"

My words are cut off by the opening bars of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" blasting from the adjacent room.
